Our Post 16 is a specialised provision for 16–19-year-olds that focusses on preparing our young people for adulthood and an independent life.
We have two different pathways in Post 16, each offering accreditation / certification in vocational subjects, Functional Skills and PSHE - which encompasses our independent living offer.
Students take a very practical approach to learning around a wide variety of subject areas which will provide them with a greater opportunity to focus on and choose a future destination. Each student will have their own individual package of learning that is decided on the individual needs and aspirations of the student.
We underpin our learning through a thematic approach – using different fun and engaging topics to develop students’ functional skills and communication skills – such as ‘At the Movies’ and ‘Café’.
When following this pathway, students will access their curriculum offer in an environment that supports any individual sensory needs through the day. The main accreditation focus of this pathway will be the Aim Awards Personal Progress which includes units such as:
Students will have opportunities to enhance their learning through community visits as well as activities within wider school.
Some students will access Entry Level 1 Aim Award accreditation modules if this is appropriate, including Entry Level 1 Maths and English and PSHE (Independent Living units)
Within the Pathway to Independence Pathway there are opportunities to work on foundation courses in Horticulture and Catering, developing basic skills and awareness of what these areas involve.
Some students in this pathway will have opportunities to explore and experience different work-based experience.
Students in this pathway will work towards Functional Skills as part of their qualification offer. This will be through Aim Awards coursework units or Edexcel Functional Skills exams. This will be dependent on the student's aspirations and needs. Students will also have opportunities to try different vocational options and will have exposure to our careers programme - having a breadth of opportunities to make informed decisions in the future. This might include work experience and different work-based opportunities. They will also work towards Aim Awards PSHE units to support preparing for adulthood. This pathway is aspirational in nature and we strive to provide individual learning packages wherever possible. Their aspirations will usually include further education or employment and we support them to be ready for this next step.
