At our school, student voice is at the heart of everything we do. Our School Parliament gives children the opportunity to take an active role in shaping our school community and developing their understanding of democracy.
As a proud participant in the UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools Award, we ensure that children’s rights are embedded throughout school life. Our School Parliament plays a vital role in promoting and protecting these rights, empowering pupils to be active, responsible citizens.
Each September, we begin the year with a special Q&A session with a local councillor, where pupils learn about how local government works and how they can positively support and influence their community. This valuable experience helps pupils understand that their voices matter and that they have the right to be heard.
Following this, pupils take part in a democratic voting process. Candidates share their ideas and vision for the school, and every child has the opportunity to cast their vote. The elected students then take on specific parliamentary roles and responsibilities, working together to represent their peers and bring forward ideas for improvement.
Our School Parliament has already made a meaningful impact. Last year, pupils organised successful fundraising events which raised funds for a Wellbeing Shed in our Sensory Garden. This special space now supports wellbeing activities and provides a calm, nurturing environment for our school community.
This year, our Parliament members are playing an important role in supporting school sustainability. They are:
Through these initiatives, our pupils are developing leadership skills, teamwork, responsibility, and a strong sense of civic duty — all rooted in our commitment to being a Rights Respecting School.
